NEW CEMETERY MAP

Our Cemetery Committee has compiled and published

a map showing locations of about 150 more cemeteries

than what is listed in the books and are still finding graves.

This map was produced by the University of Alabama

Cartography Department, is professionally done, and

is available for the price of $12 each which includes

postage, a mailing tube, and handling, (additional donations

are accepted as the chairman paid all his own travel

expenses while doing this research) and checks go

directly to him.  The map has a global positioning number

for each cemetery on a separate log which accompanies

the map.  Since Mr. Doug Brandon has served as chairman

(of the GPS Cemetery Project) and financed it for us,

orders may be requested by mail or phone directly to

him.  A check or money order made payable to Doug

Brandon is acceptable; cash is o.k. if you are in the

area and prefer to pay him in person.

12-2007  A number of new cemetery listings is on

this map.

DONATED TO THE DEKALB COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY

A patron obtained some research materials at an estate sale and

has donated them to the public library.  These names are include:

Kumlmann, Schader, Castillo, Bacon, Bishop, Borden, Cass/Cast,

Cooke, Cooper, Cunes, Dickson, Douglass, Farris, Hickey,

Keith, O'Neal, Park, Peck, Robertson, Walker.  These will be in

the Mary Weatherly Research Room at the DeKalb County Public

Library in Fort Payne, Alabama.

---------------------------------

9 Apr 2008  Many new books have been donated to

the Research Room during 2007.  We also have 68

rolls of microfilmed "loose papers" from the DeKalb

County Courthouse at the library which has longer

hours than the courthouse (10-6 Tuesday, Wednesday,

Thursday, Friday; open 10-8 on Monday) and is open

on Saturday (10-3) whereas the courthouse is only

open 8-4 Monday-Friday.  The actual loose files are

located at the courthouse, but some are very fragile

and faded so we hope the public will make use of the

microfilm (compliments of the Probate Judge, stored

at the Library due to the extended hours of service).

There is a microfilm reader/printer available at the library.

The 1900 DeKalb AL federal census is now available for

$45 a book (soft, spiral bound)  and plus $5.00 shipping and

handling, if mailed, making a total of $50.  This is a great

research reference.  The 1900 census includes month/year

of birth, married and how long, how many children born

and how many living, whether the family owns or rents

their property, relationship of person to the head of family,

and occupation...all of which help when identifying your

ancestors.  Since many families in DeKalb intermarried,

you will find yourself using this reference again and again.

A book may be requested and paid for (check, cash

if in person, or money order only please-payable to:

DeKalb County Genealogical Society) by mailing

your request and payment to:  DeKalb County
