About DeKalb County

From THE HISTORICAL NEWS, Vol 22, No. 18-AL, May 2002 issue:

DeKalb County is in the northeastern corner of Alabama. All of this area was once part of the Cherokee Nation. The white man came during the Revoluntionary War when British agents were sent to arouse the Cherokees against the southern colonists. Missionaries ventured into this part of Cherokee country in the early 1820s, and traders then began to come. One of the outstanding Indians who lived in DeKalb County was Sequoyah, a son of one of the early traders and a Cherokee woman, who grew to manhood in this area. Although he never attended school and never learned English, he developed an alphabet for the Cherokee language. As the number of white settlers increased, friction arose between the two races. A small minority of the Cherokees agreed to and signed on December 29, 1835, the Treaty of New Echota, which forced them to sell their lands. The treaty was enforced by President Jackson, and Federal troops were sent in 1838 to round up all Indians who had refused to leave. Eleven days after the signing of the treaty, DeKalb, Cherokee, and Marshall Counties were created from the Indian lands. DeKalb County was named for Baron Johann DeKalb, a Bavarian officer who trained in the Army of France and accompanied General LaFayette to America. He was killed in South Carolina on August 16, 1780 in the Battle of Camden. During the first four years the county seat was moved a number of times. Camden, one of the five early locations, was named for Camden, South Carolina where Baron DeKalb was killed. Other county seats included Rawlingsville, Bootsville, Portersville, and finally Lebanon where it remained for 36 years. Because it was thought the county seat should be served by the railroad, an election was held and Fort Payne was chosen in 1876. When the Federal troops had been sent here to round up the last of the remaining Indians in 1838, a stockade was erected on the present site of Fort Payne and named in honor of its commander, Captain John Payne.
